Sarah Ann Rockower
In this series of small photographs I explore interior versus exterior in response to my own desires and fears of living in
the city. I am interested in the struggle between the comfort and anxiety a person can feel indoors, as well as the
freedom and overwhelming expansion one can experience outside. To visually connect the mood of these contradictions,
wax was applied to the images. This creates a sense of atmosphere that goes beyond the subject. The wax also
presents a more physical appearance, which builds dimension on a flat surface and reveals color on black and white.
The pieces symbolize instability, entrapment, expansion and security, extremes that are both terrifying and thrilling.
