The American Juried Art Salon - Emerging Artists Series

James Reynolds
My major interest is in conveying unexpected ideas or feelings through photographic images, particularly of nature and
still life, to produce pleasure and sometimes puzzlement in the mind of the viewer. These photographs try to use the
relationships which exist between a real object and its context at a particular moment to note paradoxes or seeming
inconsistencies among the different aspects of the image which are reconciled when viewed together. My
compositions often seek to create tension between deep space and the patterns formed on the picture plane, contrast
between light and shadow, and saturated color to intensify their impact.

References are generally to paintings and sculptures of the Modernist period and to such photographers as Irving Penn, Man Ray, Andre
Kertesz, Lee Friedlander and Thomas Struth.
The bottom line for me is to elicit visual pleasure by capturing the viewer’s imagination for a moment and causing him/her to linger on the
image before moving on.
